THE CLASSICS · THE STORY BEHIND

Four pieces we know
inside out.

The Series 7, the Egg, the Swan and the Corona are the pieces we most often have in the workshop. Here is the story behind each of them, and what happens when they get a new cover with us.

Four Series 7 chairs in cognac leather around an oak table in a light Copenhagen apartment

ARNE JACOBSEN · 1955 · 3107

Series 7
The chair that brings the table together.

Arne Jacobsen designed the Series 7 in 1955 as a development of the Ant: four legs instead of three and a wider back that makes room for the shoulders. The shell is layer upon layer of veneer, pressed into shape under high pressure, and it is still made by Fritz Hansen almost unchanged. The chair has sold in the millions and stands everywhere from canteens to royal dining rooms.

The silhouette became truly iconic in 1963, when Lewis Morley photographed Christine Keeler sitting astride a chair that looked like a Series 7. Ironically, the chair in the picture was a copy; the original had long since proved that good form needs no explanation.

In the workshop

The shell lasts half a century, but the leather wears on the front edge and the back. We upholster the seat and back again with new foam and leather, for example from Sørensen Leather, and sew the cover with piping along the back, so the chair looks the way it did when it left the factory.

Egg
A room within the room.

The Egg was created in 1958 for the lobby of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where Arne Jacobsen designed everything from the façade to the door handles. He shaped the first models in wire and plaster in his own garage in Klampenborg, until the shell closed around the person sitting in it and gave calm in the middle of a busy hotel lobby.

The hotel still stands, and room 606 is preserved with Jacobsen’s original interior. The Egg, meanwhile, became the whole world’s chair: the high back, the curved wings and the tilting swivel base make it a small room within the room, whether it stands in a lobby or a reading corner.

In the workshop

The cover of the Egg consists of many panels that must fit precisely, or the chair loses its shape. We remove the old leather, check the shell, build the upholstery up again and sew the new cover, which is fitted to the shell by hand, before the tilt mechanism and swivel base are serviced. The footstool can be reupholstered at the same time.

Swan
Without a single straight line.

The Swan was designed in the same year and for the same hotel as the Egg, but for the lower lounges and meeting places where guests would sit facing each other. Jacobsen wanted a chair without a single straight line, and the result was one of the first chairs with a shell moulded in synthetic material, so it could have the wings that gave it its name.

Today the Swan stands in hotels, embassies and homes all over the world, but it still belongs in pairs, facing each other across a small table. It invites conversation, not sitting alone.

In the workshop

Because the shell has not a single flat surface, the cover must be sewn in panels that follow the curves without pulling or folding. We rebuild the upholstery of the whole shell layer by layer, sew the new leather or fabric to the lines of the chair and service the swivel base, so the chair turns smoothly and stands steady.

Poul M. Volther’s Corona chair with footstool in black leather in a light living room by the water

POUL M. VOLTHER · 1964 · EJ 5

Corona
The sun behind the clouds.

Poul M. Volther designed the Corona in the early 1960s, and Erik Jørgensen in Svendborg put it into production in 1964. The name comes from the sun’s corona: the four oval cushions, which grow in size towards the seat, were inspired by pictures of a solar eclipse with the light standing out behind the moon.

Volther came from FDB Møbler, where he designed sturdy furniture for ordinary homes, and the Corona was his great take on the modern easy chair: an open steel construction in which the cushions float freely and give the chair a light expression despite its size.

In the workshop

The Corona is one of the most demanding chairs to reupholster, because each of the four curved cushions must be covered so the leather lies taut and smooth around the edges without folds. We reupholster the cushions one by one, service the steel frame and joints, and can reupholster the footstool at the same time. You can see the price in the price calculator; for other materials we give a quotation from pictures.

MATERIALS

Leather, wool
and upholstery fabric.

Leather from several tanneries

We use leather from several suppliers, among them Sørensen Leather, the Danish tannery founded in 1973 that also supplies Fritz Hansen and Carl Hansen & Søn. Aniline leather is untreated and develops a beautiful patina. Semi-aniline has a light protection and withstands everyday use at the dining table. We stock cognac, black, brandy, nougat, walnut and mocca as standard and source other colours and qualities on request.

Wool and bouclé

Our upholstery fabrics come from Nevotex. Wool gives a soft, contemporary look and come in hundreds of colours. Bouclé adds texture and suits the Swan and the Egg in particular.

Upholstery fabric

Hard-wearing fabrics for chairs used every day and for businesses. We advise on durability, light fastness and care before you choose.

Reupholstering the Series 7 costs from DKK 1,800 up to DKK 2,500 per chair incl. VAT, depending on the cover. The price depends on the chosen material, and chairs with armrests cost more. Write to us with a picture and you get a fixed price.
